Painting bathroom isn’t an easy job, especially when you need to choose the right ceiling paint in bathroom. With the right shade and finish of paint, you can make your bathroom feel like a spa or a bright place to start your day.
When you plan to paint your bathroom, don’t forget to think about how damp and sometimes humid it can be. Moisture can get on the walls from hot showers and splashes from the sink. The paint you choose should be able to handle these conditions and keep mildew from growing, which is a common problem in bathrooms.
Oil Paint vs. Latex Paint
You need to put some thoughts into choosing the type of paint for bathroom ceiling. If you want to paint your bathroom, choose a latex paint that is made from water. Even though oil paint is known for being durable and able to stand up to scrubbing, which are both important qualities for bathroom paint, it needs mineral spirits to clean up, takes a long time to dry between coats, and gives off a lot of VOCs (VOCs). There’s also a chance that oil paint will turn yellow over time, especially if it’s not exposed to much light.
Latex paint is better for bathrooms, and many of the newer formulas are much more durable and is a moisture resistant bathroom paint. Just make sure that if you choose a water-based latex paint, it can be cleaned. Most of the time, the molecular structure of these paints is tighter, so water can’t get inside. This means you can scrub away stains and residue without worrying that the moisture from cleaning will ruin the paint.
When planning a bathroom makeover, do yourself a favor and go with easier-to-use and quicker-to-dry latex paint. When you use low VOC paint, you can clean brushes and spills with water, and you’ll be able to breathe better in the small room.
Bathrooms with the Best Finish
Choosing the right finish for the paint in your bathroom is a key part of making sure that your painting project goes well. The finish of the paint, or how shiny it is, might seem like a purely aesthetic choice, but it actually affects how long your bathroom walls will last and how resistant they will be to mold.
Flat paints have more tiny bits of color and less glue and resin. Because of this, these paints have a deep color and low shine, but they are more likely to let moisture in. Also, you can’t scrub them, and it can be hard to clean walls with flat paint without ruining the finish. Because of these things, it’s best not to use flat paint in the bathroom.
The only exception would be a paint that was made just for bathrooms. If you choose one of these more durable and mildew-resistant paints, you might be able to get away with a flat finish in a bathroom, which tends to be damper. Most of the time, these paints cost more than regular latex paint, and we wouldn’t recommend them unless you really want a flat finish in the bathroom.
Gloss or semi-gloss is the best paint finish for bathroom ceiling. Semi-gloss paint is shiny and easy to clean, but it can also make flaws on your walls stand out. Both will give you a finish with a bit of shine that keeps the paint from soaking up too much water, which can cause mildew to grow.
When compared to flat paint, semi-gloss paint has more resin and binders, and a glossy bathroom ceiling paint finish adds even more resin. Because of this, the molecules in these paint formulas are very close together. When painting a bathroom, this is important for two reasons:
The paint will keep water away. Instead of soaking up water and giving mildew and mold a chance to grow, a wall painted with semi-glossy or glossy paint is more likely to let water evaporate.
The harder formula works better to wash and scrub. You probably like having a clean bathroom. If you clean and sanitize your bathroom often, a semi-gloss or glossy paint finish will last longer and show less wear and tear.
Which paint is best for Ceiling Paint in Bathroom?
Look up! The ceiling of your bathroom also needs a new coat of paint. You might be tempted to use flat white paint because it’s cheap and easy, but the best shower ceiling paint is one that won’t get moldy or wet.
Choose a satin or semi-gloss paint finish for the ceiling of your bathroom. If you don’t want to draw too much attention to the ceiling in a half-bath with low moisture and humidity, you can choose a satin finish.
But if you like steamy showers and have a humid bathroom, you should choose a semi-gloss finish that is more durable and resistant to moisture. In this humid part of the house, you can often see water spots on the ceiling. Semi-gloss paint does a better job of stopping mildew and mold from growing, though.
FYI
You should never just paint over mildew. Before you paint your bathroom, you need to get rid of the mildew and seal it so it doesn’t grow back and cause more problems.
Most of the time, mildew on the walls and ceiling is scrubbed off with a solution of bleach and water. Make sure you wear a mask and gloves during this process, and make sure the room has enough air flow. Then, use a good primer that won’t let mold grow, like Zinsser Mold Killing Primer, before painting.

Matt Zinsser AllClean Scrubbable (in white)
Many people don’t know about this paint, but it’s a great, long-lasting matt emulsion, especially in white. But you can buy this product in a variety of colors online.
Zinsser AllClean is a great paint for a bathroom ceiling because of three things I like about it. The white is completely opaque, which is unusual for a durable matt. Overall, the finish is great. It is sharp and clean, and there are no flashes or roller marks. The paint is also tough and can easily handle the humidity in a bathroom.
A durable matt will never be able to handle condensation as well as an eggshell, but this paint comes close, and the finish is much better than that of an eggshell.
Eggshell Armstead
You can get almost any color of Armstead eggshell online or at the Dulux Decorating Centre. Usually, you wouldn’t use an eggshell product on a bigger ceiling because the finish isn’t good enough, but there is a case for using it in a bathroom. Acrylic eggshell paint can handle a lot of condensation, and even if water runs down it, it won’t leave a mark. Choose standard white instead of brilliant white if you want a white ceiling. The paint will look much better.
Any trade eggshell that is good enough will do. I chose to talk about Armstead because, like most Armstead paints, it’s a good deal.
Opacity works well, except when it comes to white. So, if you want to paint over a strong color with white, you might want to use a good quality vinyl matt to cover the color first, then use Armstead Eggshell as a topcoat. The sheen level of the finish is about 20%. It will be easy to use, and the paint will hold up in a bathroom. This paint is also easy to clean, which is a big plus for a bathroom.
Zinsser Perma White Mound Resistant Paint
Zinsser Perma White is a very cool product that I often use in bathrooms. You can buy it online in white or a few other colors. You could choose a matte or a satin finish.
White has poor opacity, and the paint will run as you apply it, but the end result is amazing. The best thing about this paint is that it doesn’t get moldy. There are no black spores or bad places to breathe. There are only clean, smooth surfaces. Also, this paint lasts a long time. After you decorate, surfaces will look brand new for a long time. It’s one of the best paint for humid bathroom.
About 8 years ago, I used Zinsser Perma White to paint the shower rooms next to a swimming pool. Before I painted them, they always had problems with mold and peeling paint. To stay on top of it, I had them painted every year or so. Because I used Perma White, my work has lasted 8 years and is still going strong.
